MEMBERSHIP VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT POLICY
The Edmonton Highland Dancing Association (EHDA) is run solely by volunteers. There are no paid positions to run competitions, workshops, pipe practices and other highland events. We count on our membership to assist at events and behind the scenes so that our events are successful. We recognize new dancing families can be unfamiliar with what is required to fulfill their volunteer shifts and we are committed to helping all members learn new volunteer roles.
Beginning in the 2019-2020 dancing season, volunteering is a requirement of membership in the EHDA.
Volunteer roles include morning competition set up, registration (giving out competitor numbers), lining up dancers, running (collecting judge’s sheets), scrutineering (compiling judge’s marks), announcing, afternoon competition clean up, and many other behind the scenes roles. They can be easily learned and having these positions filled before the day of the competition allows for the members organizing the events to focus on running the competition smoothly.
No volunteer commitment is required for members with Primary dancers only (dancer must be under 7 years at time of application), first-time half-year members or associate members.
The volunteer requirement can be fulfilled by becoming a member of the Executive, taking a Committee position or working shifts at an EHDA competition. The volunteer shift requirements for each membership number are as follows:
- Beginner – 1 volunteer shift
- Novice/Intermediate/Premier – 2 volunteer shifts
- More than one dancer under the same membership number – 2 volunteer shifts
In order to complete your registration, you must mail a cheque in the amount of $50 per required volunteer shift (Beginners submit a cheque for $50, all other members submit a cheque for $100) to the Membership Coordinator or pay this fee online with your membership. Failure to pay this fee will result in your membership not being processed.
Once your volunteer commitment has been satisfied, your cheque will be destroyed or your funds will be returned. Failure to meet the volunteer shifts by June 1 of the membership year will result in the cheque being cashed and the dancer will be ineligible for rep support for the current membership year.
Please postdate your volunteer commitment cheque for January 1, 2020, and drop it in the mail as soon as possible to complete your membership application. Membership numbers will not be assigned if your volunteer commitment payment is not received or is incorrectly dated.
